Commitment to Our Community
SORSA is committed to being a positive and active influence in our community. We make special efforts to reach the kids of our community by participating in and hosting local events that offer those who may not otherwise have the opportunity, the resources to explore technologies of the future in a way that is fun and educational. Below is a list of a few of the events SORSA has been involved with since 2001.
SORSA members have:
-Taught robotics classes at Kids Unlimited's 2009 Summer Camp.
-Presented robotics at local elementary, middle and high school classrooms inspiring young people to get involved in robotics technology.
-Presented robotics at High School Career Days and directed students to robotics courses at RCC and OIT.
-Offered elective-type studies to homeschooled kids.
-Taught robotics to grade schoolers at Brighton Academy in Grants Pass.
-Taught summer classes on robotics at the Grants Pass Boys & Girls Club where 4 teams (~20 kids) built and competed their programmable robots.
-Provided robot displays and demonstrations at the Josephine County Fair creating a local interest in robotics technology.
-Offered a competitive alternative to kids who are unable to compete in sports.
-Sponsored teenagers to compete in robot competitions in other states.
-Presented robotics to several local Boy Scouts troops.
-Presented robotics to troubled teens at the Josephine County Oregon Youth Authority.
-Been guest speakers at other local clubs including Rotary, Kiwanas and the Grants Pass Flyers Club.
-Founded, and continues to support, the RCC Robotics Club on the Redwood Campus in Josephine County.
-Offered robotic services to community projects like the talking tree at Frog-o-Fair and Theater for Kids.
-Donated and helped raise money for local Boys & Girls Clubs and Toys for Tots.
-Participated in numerous community events including Frog-O-Fair, Walk the Rogue, Grants Pass Bridge Ceremony, Josephine County Fair, KTVL Kids Day, Relay for Life, The Courier Swap Meet, Breast Cancer Awareness, Boatnik Parades, Asian Festival in Eugene and the ScienceWorks Museum in Ashland to name a few.
-Hosted monthly meetings in Grants Pass since 2001, and now also in Medford, where aspiring and experienced roboticists of all ages can work together and learn from each other as they explore the exciting world of robotics.
-Hosted RoboMaxx events at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in 2002 and the Josephine County Fairgrounds in 2003 and 2004 which brought robotics competitors and vendors to the Rogue Valley from many parts of the world. To learn more about the RoboMaxx events, click here.
-Represented Southern Oregon by entering robots of their own designs in competitions up and down the entire West Coast and in Canada. Many have won substantial prizes.
